SULLIGENT, Ala. (WCBI) — Property owners and city leaders in Sulligent, Ala. are moving into the cleanup phase from a fire that destroyed or damaged several historic downtown buildings June 7.

Mayor Scott Bowman says insurance companies are waiting on final fire reports and safety and structural inspections before taking the next steps to rebuild. One of the properties may go on the market for sale while the others are making plans to repair their old buildings.

Bowman says the city is looking at opportunities to make the downtown centerpiece even more attractive while trying to preserve the historic nature.

“It’s been a difficult time, but we are looking for good things to come out of it,” Bowman said of the long process.
Although no final cause has been listed, preliminary investigation suggests the fires were electrical.
