STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Family and friends are honoring the memory of a loved one by presenting a scholarship in his name to one local high school graduate.

Devin Mitchell passed away tragically in 2012. Now two years after the teen’s sudden death, his family is promising to keep his memory alive by helping others.

The second annual scholarship program was held in Mitchell’s honor.

The scholarship is for $2,000 and a Maben High School senior received the award.

Mitchell’s family says they hope this will be one way for people to remember Devin.

“It’s very important to keep his legacy because Devin was 16 years old. In the time that he was alive he was just like a minister to all kind of people around. He never met a stranger and everybody he came in contact with, the first thing he would tell them about is God. And knowing he put God first in everything he done,” said Aubrey Mitchell, Devin’s father.

Mitchell’s family encourages more high school students to apply for the scholarship in the future.
