COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-They’re one of the most misunderstood breeds and scrutinized by the public…pit bulls. But one local dog rescue is working to change that image.

The non-profit organization, Shaw Pit Bull Rescue, were honored guests at Thursday’s luncheon at the Columbus Exchange Club. Where they spoke to locals about their program that is dedicated to saving abused, abandoned or neglected American Pit Bull Terriers. One member says by educating people about the breed they can help prevent the negative stigma attached to their breed.

“Pitbulls are not a bad breed. They are doing what they are taught, they’re doing what they are trained. It’s kind of like a kid, you train the kid to do all these bad things forever. They weren’t a bad kid, you taught it that. You can change that. O we are trying to rehabilitate them and work with them break these bad habits,” says Lesley Bailey.
