TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo’s Fairpark was turned into Germany, complete with a polka band, stein contests, German food and a costume contest.

It was part of the city’s first ever “Octoberfest.” The city sponsored event featured food vendors and samples of beer and ale.

Cafe two twelve owner Jason Hayden was appointed “Mayor ” of Octoberfest and says it’s exciting to see the large turnout.

“Events like this bring people in from out of town and get people in Tupelo moving around and shopping at our local establishments.Even today at our restaurant we had a huge sales day and I think it had a lot to do with people setting up and coming to town for things like this.”

Prizes were given for the German costume contest, and the stein strength challenge.
