TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -The city of Tupelo has extended the hours alcohol can be sold within the city limits. By a 4-3 margin the council approved an ordinance that allows alcohol sales from 10am to 1am seven days a week. It was put on the council agenda at the request of the Tupelo Restaurant Association. But several council members were not happy with Mayor Jason Shelton’s call for the council to go ahead and vote on the measure, without hearing from pastors and others who might express opposition to the change.

“It’s been controversial for a hundred years and it’ll be controversial for a hundred more. My only point was that I don’t think we should get in the middle of a controversial issue as we try to deal with the tornado recovery and that’s why it was my request to go ahead and just vote on it now rather than it be a prolonged divisive issue for the community.”

The council tabled another proposal that would study the possibility of adding electronic cigarettes to the city’s smoking ban.
