TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — He was the first African American elected to the city council in Tupelo, now a move is underway to honor Hank Grayson’s achievements, and those of other local Civil Rights pioneers.

Jim Casey, of the Tupelo – Lee County NAACP, presented a request to the Tupelo City Council to rename Barnes Street as Boyce “Hank” Grayson Memorial Way. Mayor Jason Shelton has proposed an alternate plan that would include markers closer to Grayson’s home on North Madison Street. The council is studying both proposals.
