TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Progress is being made as Tupelo City Council members support the mayor’s proposed budget.

The $32.8 million budget appears to have the support of all council members, as meetings have taken place throughout the week to review the proposed 2015 fiscal year budget.

Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton and council members still need to hammer out a few details, such as how much to spend on street repairs, Shelton says this year the process has been smooth.

“There are not any major changes in the budget this year. It’s very similar to last year, very excited there are no new taxes, no new debt, and it looks like we are going to be able to create a budget surplus,” Shelton said.

Plans call for the council to vote on the proposed budget Sept. 12. State law sets a deadline of Sept. 15 for cities to pass budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.
