TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The Tupelo City Council approves a $33 million budget for next fiscal year, which does not include a tax increase.

The budget has a projected surplus of about $100,000, even with hiring two animal control officers for the police department, along with more responsibilities for police involving animal control.

Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton believes the committee formed to help create the budget allowed the process smoothly this year.

“We had numerous meetings on each department with that budget committee to go line by line. The entire budget and what we really are hoping to and working towards is creating a culture of savings and the mindset of saving what we can, when we can, where we can,” Shelton said.

Councilmen could have waited until Sept. 15 to approve the budget, but didn’t need the extra time.
