Video: Tupelo Gets New Civil Rights Marker

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The first marker for a historical enrichment program was unveiled in Tupelo on Friday.

City officials and other dignitaries gathered at Reed’s Gumtree Bookstore to unveil the initial marker for the Heritage Trails Enrichment program.

The marker is part of the Civil Rights and African American Heritage Trail. It’s at the site of the former F. W. Woolworth’s Store, where peaceful sit-ins were held during the 1960′s. There were a few people in the crowd today who took part in the sit-ins.

“I was very young during that time. To me it was a lot of fun. I don’t think I really understood the intensity of it but it was like an upheavel, but it was enjoyable to me because I was too young to understand what was going on,” says Florestine Gladney, a sit-in

This is the first of ten markers that will be placed throughout the area.
