TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The largest public school in the state of Mississippi is celebrating its 100th birthday.

Tupelo High School has grown to more than 2,000 students since its humble beginning in 1914, when there were only about 100 students.

Tupelo High has prided itself on offering a wide variety of academic and athletic opportunities few schools can match.

Principal Jason Harris says the Golden Wave, the school’s mascot, has a special meaning.

“That just means rising unusually high and meeting those high expectations,” Harris said. “We have a rich tradition here of athletic excellence, academic excellence and also excellence in the fine arts. When you associate Tupelo High School, you associate excellence with that.”

Some of Tupelo’s class of 2014 took part in this weekend’s festivities as the school begins its second century of teaching the city’s youth.
