TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — A Tupelo man is spending a week at the Mall at Barnes Crossing to raise money for two worthy causes.

This is the eighth straight year disabled Marine veteran, Scott Burns, is conducting “7 Days for the Troops.”

He intends to raise $15,000.

Last year he raised $9,000 for Purple Heart Homes, which builds homes for disabled vets.

But this year, Burns says he’s adding another group.

“Normally 100 percent of it goes to disabled veterans or to veterans,” Burns said. “But this year after the tornado we almost called the event off. But we found out that Eight Days of Hope was coming to town. And we also know that they are working on some veterans’ homes. So we decided that we would split the money between the two groups.”

Burns says he won’t wrap up his campaign until July 4.

He says the mall is a good location because so many people gather in the food court and are “a captive audience.”
