TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Residents of one Tupelo neighborhood were able to ask city officials questions about clean up and recovery after Monday’s tornado. The regular monthly meeting of the Joyner Neighborhood Association was scheduled for this evening. It took place at the gym of St Luke’s United Methodist Church, which was devastated by the twister. Department heads from the city took time to answer questions from neighborhood residents. Mayor Jason Shelton said many homes in the area will have to be rebuilt and action from Jackson and Washington DC will help speed up the process and relief.

“We are grateful for the president and governor for their quick action on declaring it both a federal and state disaster area,” said Shelton. “FEMA is here trying to set up a disaster relief headquarters for them, there’s going to be assistance available, some debris removal will begin this weekend by the city of Tupelo.”

The mayor is hopeful a contract will be in place by early next week for more extensive debris removal.
