TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Tupelo residents will be honoring a fallen police officer who was killed in the line of duty about a year ago.

The city will hold a memorial service for Sgt. Gale Stauffer, Tuesday, at Fairpark in downtown Tupelo.

Stauffer was fatally shot while responding to a bank robbery on South Gloster Street on December 23, 2013.

Officer Joseph Maher also responded to the robbery call, and is still recovering from being shot in the head.

The service will start at 2:45 p.m., and will end with a moment of silence at 3:17 p.m. – when Stauffer was pronounced dead.

Following the service, there will be a reception at the Ice House on Spring Street, where city leaders will present a check to the Stauffer and Maher funds.
