Video: Tupelo School District Seeks FEMA Grant for Safe Domes

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The Tupelo Public School District is trying to keep students safe from future storms.

The district is applying for a FEMA grant to build tornado safe rooms on four of its campuses.

Tupelo High, Carver Elementary, Joyner Elementary and Thomas Street Elementary could all have concrete domes. They would double as gyms or multipurpose rooms.

The total cost of the project is $5.79 million. The grant would pay for 90 percent of the construction. The district would have to pay just over $1 million.
