COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-Only four days after alligator hunting season began in Mississippi and a group of Starkville hunters broke the record for the largest alligator.

Every alligator hunter heads out on the water hoping to bag a record size gator.

That’s exactly what happened for Brian Montgomery and Jesse Phillips during a hunting trip in Vicksburg.

“Scott Berry who is a good friend of ours alligator hunts a lot and he had some other friends that he took them on Friday night course they caught the first state record and then we went back with Scott Monday night and that’s whenever we ran into this guy,” says Brian Montgomery.

Local photographer Jesse Phillips tagged along for the hunt to get shots. Little did he know his first hunt would go down in history.

“I don’t like lizards. I don’t like snakes and I don’t like creepy crawly things so on the way down there I realized I kind of got over my head with a big old gator I didn’t know how I was going to react but it turned out alright. Once it started getting hairy kind of then the fear went out the window and just start reacting and three grown men in a 16-foot boat… we were on top of each other,” says Jesse Phillips.

The three men fought the 13.5 foot alligator for 69 minutes.

It even took a chink out of their aluminum boat before they killed the 792 pound alligator.

“We just has to gut it out and hang on and once it was over once we put him out it was a wave of relief,” says Phillips.

Even though they caught the record breaking alligator, Montgomery says he doesn’t plan on joining the members from the television show, “Swamp People,” anytime soon.

“I don’t know about that we enjoy the outdoors and hunting and fishing and getting out and doing what we do and being with friends and catching up so it was real awesome,” says Montgomery.

“There is plenty more out there just wait it will be broken before tool long,” says Phillips.

Bass Pro shop in Pearl, Mississippi has contacted the group about possibly displaying the record alligator in their store.
