TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — First graders at one local elementary school had a chance to learn about Africa and art, because of a traveling exhibit.

The University of Mississippi Museum took a traveling trunk program titled “African Art” to Tupelo’s Joyner Elementary School.

The students were able to see and touch some authentic musical instruments and masks from Africa. Then, they were able to create their own masks.

“With this collection they actually get to touch some of it, which is rare,” Julie Mauldin with the University of Mississippi said. “A lot of times they don’t get to touch things in museums, so this is a really great activity for the kids.”

“I like it and I’m going to scare my mom and dad, and I’m going to tie it up and play with it when I get home,” first grade student Max Word said.

The program coincides with the first graders and their study of different parts of the world, through the eyes of the popular children’s character Flat Stanley.
