COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The owner is recovering and clean up is beginning following the partial collapse of a historic downtown Columbus building. Ann Davis suffered a broken arm and three broken ribs when the rear wall of her Main Street offices collapsed just before 5 p.m. Monday. Davis got a permit last November to restore the front of the building into her real estate office and a contractor was turning the rear portion into more offices and apartments upstairs. City inspectors think the removal of a back deck and hole for a larger door may have weakened the wall and the piers that hold it up. The contractor and the owner of a carpentry shop in the basement already were gone when the wall fell. Some surrounding offices and apartments were empty this morning to air out lingering natural gas from a leak caused by the collapse.
