TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s official. The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) formally approves Seaport Airlines coming to Tupelo.

Now, the city, airport, Seaport and Silver Airways must work out the transition and a timeline.

Seaport was recommended by city and airport leaders after Silver Airways said in April it discontinue services. It must work out agreements with passengers with existing tickets as part of the transition.

Seaport eventually plans to offer a total of 30 flights per week to Memphis and Nashville on nine passenger planes, but may start out with just one of the destinations, phase in the additional service.

Seaport Airlines’ contract is for two years, with $2.5 million per year in federal subsidies.
