VARDAMAN, MISS. (WCBI) – A local shelter gets a grant to help battered and abused women who need new phones and help starting a new life.

Verizon Wireless presented a $3,000 grant to Safe Haven Inc.  The money is part of the HopeLine Initiative.

That program allows women who have been abused to get a new cell phone with 3 thousand free minutes.

The initiative allows people to donate used cell phones and accessories.  The devices are refurbished then donated to domestic violence shelters for use by victims.

“That gives women like a line, that they can keep in touch with people and also it’s a great way to look for jobs , it’s a great way for them to use that as a help,” said Lori Singleton, of Verizon.

“It’s going to be a huge help to , to help with all the costs it takes to help run the shelter and everything,” said Nikki Kraft, who represents Safe Haven, Inc.

Safe Haven also held a two hour class for professionals dealing with ways to detect and prevent domestic violence and abuse.
