TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – There’s a dog population explosion in Lee County.

That’s why the Mall at Barnes Crossing sponsored the first annual “Walk for the Paws” this weekend. Dog lovers were able to walk their dogs around the mall and enter them in various contests including the dog that does the most tricks and dogs that have the most unusual markings. Summer Knight is a board member with the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society. She says all the proceeds went to the shelter’s low cost spade and neuter program.

“It is extremely important to get animal spayed and neutered because in Tupelo and Lee County and surrounding areas we are way over-populated with animals and if we don’t get them spade and neutered they’re just going to keep reproducing and we’ll just have millions and we can’t have that so it is definitely important to please and spade and neuter your animals,” says Summer Knight with the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society.

Knight says the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society is continuing to work on a feasibility study to build a new shelter in the next couple of years. She says the current one is too small but a half million dollars has been raised for the project so far.
