Video: West Point School Consolidation Update

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – School districts in our viewing area are consolidating. Educators and lawmakers think that consolidation would save money while improving academic learning.

West Clay Elementary School in rural Clay County is about to become a part of the West Point Consolidated School District, a merger that’s being well received.

“Superintendent in Clay County, Mrs. Brewer and I are working closely, and making sure we are on the same page with preparing for this consolidation. I think its going pretty well,” said Burnell McDonald, West Point Schools Superintendent.

At the present time, Clay County students in grades seven through 12 are already attending city schools. Supporters of consolidation are saying that is adding up to being a smooth process.

“We are talking about consolidation, taking on K-6 students. Which is going to be an easy transition for us. I think it’s a great thing. We are looking forward to this transition period,” said McDonald.

A large percentage of budgets deals with personnel and staffing.

“And this is going to ensure that all of our students are exposed to the same type quality, not saying that it is not happening. Because really what they are doing in the elementary school in the county over the years has been great,” said McDonald.

“The consolidation of the West Point School District and Clay County School District will be official July 1, 2015. At this point, plans are to leave the Clay County Elementary School open for class,” McDonald said.
