COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Officials with the Mississippi Insurance Commission say they’re still working on a health care exchange program after the federal government rejected their plan.

State Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services denied the state’s proposal.

Chaney blames politics, HHS and the Obama administration.

Officials say they’re not at square one, but they are looking over their plan.

“We’ve not given up, it may not end up looking exactly like we thought that it would at the start but I think we’re going to continue to do what we can. The Commissioner is convinced that a health exchange will be beneficial to the people of Mississippi especially small business owners and i’m pretty sure he’s not given up on that yet,” says Chief of Staff Joseph Ammerman for the Mississippi Insurance Department.

Governor Phil Bryant has been opposed to a health care exchange, calling it a portal for Obamacare to come into the state.
