WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — Board games designed to test the players knowledge of World War One is a chance for some West Point High Ninth Graders to have fun while fulfilling academic requirements. Using a World War One theme, the young skilled artisans are crafting a board game from existing games on the market or being bold, creating their own original design.

“At first we had to do it over because we had, it was okay. We just didn’t like it, but it wasn’t that hard to make,” said Mary Hannah Sullivan, West Point High.

“Because they are not use to being let loose like this. They are use to sitting in the classroom listening to the teacher taking notes and taking test. Here they’re teaching themselves,” said Bruce Mize, World History Teacher.

“And after that we chose to stick with, Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader. And it took a lot of work to put it together,” said Tyteanna Johnson/West Point High.

Some of the board games start with questions about the war that are researched by students, others begin with the roll of a dice.

“And if you landed on like sniper or captured by the enemy, you have to answer a question. And it you get the question right you can stay on the square. But if you get it wrong you have to go back to the number you rolled,” said Sullivan.

“And it ties in to English standards, in to History standards, in to US History standards, World History, Government, Economics. Also its going to tie in to art when they start to design their board games. And its going to go into the math subjects like geometry and statistics,” said Mize.

Under the watchful eyes of educators who are judging their design projects, the battle now between 7 teams, is for first place.

“I basically taught them that when they are pitching this to the judges to pitch it as if they are trying to sell it. So that gives them a little real world experience,” said Mize.

“I hope that we do good because we tried and we did all that we could do to get on it. Yes very hard battle,” said Tyteanna Johnson.

World History “Team 3” consisting of Chamiya Brownlee, Tyteanna Johnson, Shakaishia McCurry, and Rachel Sambry won first place for their World War One board game project. Team 6 won second place and team 5 captured third place.
