PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) — More than 600 fresh Christmas wreaths are being prepared for a weekend project that honors U.S. military veterans.

73 boxes of wreaths were delivered this morning to Pontotoc as part of the Wreaths Across America project.

The project allows people to purchase wreaths. Each wreath will be placed at the grave of a military veteran from the Pontotoc area.

Organizers say it is a tribute to those who have serve the country and it is also a teaching tool for young people.

“We have grandmothers that take their grandchildren, and it’s a way you can teach the kids about the sacrifices that are made during wartime, and there’s also sacrifices made during peacetime,” Project Coordinator Donna Bagwell said. “There’s a lot of our military families that are separated during the holidays.”

A ceremony will take place 11 a.m. Saturday at the Pontotoc town square, where the wreaths will be taken to graves of military veterans.
