CLAY COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Seven months after breaking ground, construction of the new Yokohama tire plant in Clay County remains on schedule, despite four months of cold, wet weather.

A giant three-story structure that will eventually cover a million square feet is rising over the landscape on 1,000 acres north of West Point.

Crews from Kajima Associates are working almost 24/7 to overcome any delays caused by the tough winter, and Clay County leaders say the project is on schedule to open in October next year.

The first phase is expected to employ about 500 people.

The company plans three more phases, and as much as a $2 billion investment during the next 10 years.

Crews from Eutaw Construction also have shaken off the winter weather to stay on schedule with a $19.5 million road to serve the new plant.

The road will connect Yokohama and Highway 45 Alternate, providing improved access for trucks serving the commercial tire plant and workers coming from the north.
