WEBSTER CO., Miss. (WCBI) – A Webster County woman held a family against their will, then made a run for it when the law showed up. Tonight Kanisha Mayes is behind bars, facing charges of kidnapping and eluding law enforcement.

It all started this morning about 10:00 a.m. That’s when Eupora Police Chief Greg Hunter responded to a 9-11 call for a lady in distress. Webster County Sheriff Tim Mitchell tells WCBI News the chief witnessed the suspect dragging another lady across the yard by gunpoint. The suspect fled the scene, with Eupora police and Webster County deputies in pursuit. Law officers chased Mayes about 7 miles before they were able to apprehend her. Investigators say they learned Mayes held a family of three at gunpoint in their house.

The victims are shaken up, but not injured. Deputies recovered a gun and a knife in the SUV they say Mayes used as a getaway car. Her initial appearance in court is scheduled for Friday.
