EUPORA, Miss. (WCBI) — Webster County plans to be back in business soon after Thursday’s fire that destroyed the county’s historic courthouse in Walthall.

County officeholders, employees and volunteers spent today moving into temporary offices in the county justice center in Eupora. The county is using rented and borrowed equipment and furniture to get circuit and chancery courts and the tax assessor’s offices in operation.

They hope to reopen Monday, Jan. 28.

Records saved from the fire still are being sorted to see what can be used and what must be reconstructed. Some records that were wet have been freeze dried and others that suffered smoke damage are being air dried.

Circuit Court Clerk Deborah Neal says it appears many of her records are salvageable but it’s unclear about ones from the tax assessor or Chancery Court.
