West Point Rejects Suit Settlement

[bitsontherun tejKdnMV] WEST POINT, Miss. (AP) – City leaders in West Point have rejected a settlement in former police chief Steve Bingham’s wrongful termination lawsuit.

Bingham sued the city in 2009. A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit this past week when the settlement was reached.

The Daily Times Leader reports (http://bit.ly/Qel51B) that the mayor and board of aldermen disapproved the settlement Tuesday night. City Attorney Orlando R. Richmond Sr. says city leaders feel the racial allegations made against the board by Bingham are false and Bingham is not entitled to any settlement.

Bingham was fired in August 2009. He alleged in his lawsuit that he was fired because he is white and a majority of the Board of Mayor and Selectmen is black.

Bingham is now police chief in Booneville.
