West Point Shooting

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – West Point Police are investigating a shooting that occurred on Saturday night at Jim James Court. Shortly after 8:00pm officers were dispatched to the 5th Street location in reference to shots fired. Upon arrival officers discovered one man inside an apartment who was suffering from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the leg.

The man, whose name is not being released, reported to the police that he was sitting on the porch of one of the apartment units with a man approached from around the back of complex wearing all black. The man reportedly fired multiple shots in the direction of the victim striking him at least once and then fled the scene on foot.

No other eye-witnesses have been located but nearby residents reported hearing over ten shots fired. The victim was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus for treatment. His condition is not known.

Police gathered some physical evidence on the scene and are currently working on a list of suspects. According to Chief Brinkley, “We have also received tips that indicate that there was a second victim in this shooting who declined to reveal himself to the police and did not seek medical attention for his injuries.

Obviously, the fact that this person is evading authorities is cause for concern and logically puts him at the top of the suspect list. Since this unknown victim is a person of interest in this case, those who may be assisting him by attending to his wounds or concealing his whereabouts may find themselves facing criminal charges as well.”

This incident is still under investigation and anyone with any information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers. Your tip could lead to a reward worth up to a $1,000.
