Winona Cracks Down on Abandoned Rails

WINONA, Miss. (WCBI) — Winona wants two rail companies to clean up their tracks, even if they aren’t being used anymore.

Aldermen say they’ve received numerous complaints about health and safety hazards from overgrown rail rights of way, dilapidated rail buildings and rail spikes damaging cars.

Aldermen set Aug. 5 hearings to force both the Grenada Railway and the C and G Rail to act. If the companies won’t, the city can do it and charge them.

Winona is working with numerous communities to the east to try to reopen the C and G Rail to West Point and with others to the north and the south to force the Grenada Railway to remain open from Memphis to Canton.
