Winona Veteran to Receive High Honor

ATLANTA, Miss. (WCBI) – A Winona veteran will receive France’s highest honor. William Garrett (Technician 4th Grade, Company C, 245th Engineering Combat Battalion) is one of 12 people across the southeast to receive the Legion Of Honor from the newly appointed Consul General of France. France is giving the honor as a way to express their gratitude to those who liberated it from oppression from 1944-45. A ceremony will be held Thursday, September 27 at the Lenox Building in Atlanta.

Also receiving the honor is: Ricahrd Gibian of Selma, Alabama, Isaac Storey of Rome, Georgia, Charles Sheperd Jr. of Chamblee, Georgia, William Varnadoe, from Huntsville, Alabama, Julian Rau, of Decatur, Georgia, Morton Waitzman of Atlanta, Georgia, Lewis Baldwin of Double Springs, Alabama, Marion Nesmith of Snellville, Georgia, Stanley Richardson, of Alexander City, Alabama, Eddie Sessions of Carrollton, Georgia, and James Austin of Rome, Georgia.
