STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — As expected, Starkville’s Mayor Parker Wiseman today vetoed a decision to reopen a neighborhood street.

The veto comes two weeks after alderman voted 3-2 to remove a barrier where Douglas McArthur Drive meets Stark Road in Green Oaks Subdivision.

City planners recommend the street at least partially be reopened to improve safety because the gate now in place doesn’t always work, causing problems for emergency responders. But residents of Green Oaks oppose opening any roads through the subdivision for fear of increased traffic hazards.

Wiseman says previous efforts to keep the road closed prompted the city to install the emergency entrance gate and removing it will only cause renewed enforcement issues.

It’ll take five votes to override Parker’s veto. The issue is expected to be on Aldermen’s Oct. 16 agenda.
