LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Two long-awaited water and drainage projects in East Columbus neighborhoods are making headway.

The Tombigbee River Valley Management District has begun major drainage work to clear a creek along Pickens Drive and Pickensville Road. Trees and other debris have clogged the creek for years, causing flooding and road damage.

Meanwhile, the county has received a $120,000 grant to extend East Lowndes Water Association service to 75 residents along East Railroad and Frisco Roads. East Lowndes is matching the grant.

The residents have been living without water after their wells began drying up two years ago.

The extension of the water lines could start early next year.
