Artists make downtown Columbus their canvas

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- You may have noticed some new colors in downtown Columbus.

That’s because a local artist Jennifer Garrard is it “adopting a box” painting gorgeous flowers.

It’s part of a Main Street Columbus project that’s titled Adopt a Box.

An artist or a businesses can sponsor a utility box downtown and give it a new look.

Garrard says she’s excited to be the first artist and is excited for everyone to see the finished piece.

“I told a lady yesterday that if it made her smile then I’ve done my job. So, people have been wonderful. Just yelling out their windows saying they can’t wait to see the rest of the boxes painted. It is an excited project and it gives tourists something to go take their picture with to remember Columbus by. Just a little bit of happiness on the corners,” said Garrard.

She plans on doing the finishing touches Wednesday.

She will have spent around 24 hours total painting the box at the light at College and 5th Streets.

If any business or artists is interested in adopting one of the utility boxes, just contact Main Street Columbus located in the heart of downtown.
