Escaped Mississippi inmate has been captured in Ohio

ALCORN COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A state inmate’s bid for freedom is short-lived.

Mississippi Department of Corrections officers and U.S. Marshals caught up with Garnett Hughes this morning in Akron, Ohio.

Yvette Mendoza, a woman identified by officers as Hughes’ girlfriend was also arrested at the home where Hughes was captured.

She is facing charges for obstructing official business.

Hughes escaped custody Friday morning, after attending a family funeral in Belzoni.

He reportedly got loose from his restraints and overpowered a guard.

Hughes was convicted of kidnapping and sexual battery in Alcorn County.

He is serving a life sentence at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Lauderdale County.
