COLUMBUS, MISS. (WCBI) Shop local. Eat Local. That is what you do when you buy items from the Columbus Farmer’s Market. This morning’s market had a holiday theme where locals could shop for more than the normal Saturday market items.

Artwork, food, and jewelry took over downtown as locals explored the “home grown” items. Shopping local benefits the person selling things and helps the town says local artist, Kenneth Smith.

“It keeps everything, all the revenues here in this town, so I think it’s very important.”

Supporting locals who sell fruit and vegetables gives you that guarantee that the food hasn’t been shipped from all over the world. Vendor, Melvin Ellis, sells and buys local because of this.

“The blueberries coming from South America, Chile, you know this is fresh stuff here, everything is local.”

Some people prefer to shop local like college student, Cassidy DeGreen, because it showcases the town.

“There’s people in our area that, you know, run these businesses and need support and giant corporate businesses have support all over the world, and so we need to give back to our community in the best way we can do that besides, you know, volunteering is also supporting local businesses.”

Buying from locals also allows for shoppers to have things that you may not find just anywhere else.
