Jonathan Flippo
Sports Reporter

Jonathan was born on Fathers’ Day, June 19, 1988. Jonathan grew up in a small town called Hamilton in Mississippi, home of the Hamilton Lions. Jonathan was destined to love sports. His father named him after a quarterback for the Seattle Sea Hawks, Dave Kreig. Jonathan grew up sitting on his dad’s lap, watching football and hollering “touchdown” at the age of two. He and his dad went to every local football game around Hamilton. Jonathan started playing T-Ball sports in the summer, but he did not enjoyed baseball as much as he did football. So between the ages of 11 or 12, Kenny, Jonathan’s dad and others in the Hamilton area started a Pee-Wee football team. The team had to play other teams from Alabama, because at that time Mississippi did not have local Pee-Wee football. This was around the late 90’s or 2000. That same year at Christmas, Jonathan asked Santa to bring him a football, tee and a goal post like the “real one” on the football field at Hamilton School. Well, you know what happened, he got it. His mom talked with a local welder and had one made. Jonathan thought he wanted to be a kicker for his team. Jonathan would play and kick that football every afternoon after school. Now, Jonathan Kreig Flippo is living his dream and doing what he loves, working as a reporter for WCBI in Columbus Mississippi.

Jonathan graduated Hamilton High in 2008 after receiving different awards in academics, as well as, “Most Improved Athlete” and the “Heart of the Lion” award. The daughters of the America Revolutionary War gave him the Monroe County citizenship award. His last year at school he was not eligible to play football because of his age, but the coach wanted him to film the games. He was a natural at filming the games and later, he would be in the announcer’s box calling the games. He knew then, that is what he wanted to do as a career.

Jonathan is a 2013 graduate from Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi. He has a degree in Kinesiology Concentration in sports studies with an emphasis in communications. Jonathan’s internship with WCBI for eight weeks, lead to a job with the station. He is very blessed with the job that he loves. His goal is to grow and get better in his profession. Jonathan is a true southern guy who loves his family and friends, and of course sports.
