Alabama Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday This Weekend

This weekend, Alabama is holding its seventh annual severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday from Friday through Sunday at retailers around the state.

The weekend is designed to help shoppers stock up tax free on common supplies used in emergency preparedness and disaster safety kits.  Items that are eligible must be under $60.

The state’s 4-percent sales tax is excluded, and many local communities are also waiving sales tax, meaning saves can be as high as 10-percent locally.

To help you get severe weather prepared, Chief Meteorologist Keith Gibson and the WCBI Weather Team will be at Durham’s Pharmacy in Vernon, AL on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.  There, you can purchase a tax free weather radio, have WCBI program it for you and pick up emergency preparedness supplies for the upcoming severe weather season.

Items that are included in the sales tax discount must be under $60 and may include but not limited to the following;

• NOAA weather radios
• flashlights
• lanterns
• battery powered/hand-crank radios
• batteries
• first aid kits
• cell phone chargers
• two way radios
• can openers
• tarps and plastic sheeting
• duct tape
• fire extinguishers
• coolers
• ice packs
• plywood
• window film
• smoke/fire/carbon monoxide detectors
