EAST UNION HIGH SCHOOL URCHINS

BLUE SPRINGS, Miss. (WCBI) — Changes are coming at East Union in 2015.

The Urchins graduate a strong senior class from a year ago and welcome in a new head coach in Kevin Walton. But outside of that, it’s business as usual for a team that’s hoping to return to their success they had two seasons ago.

“I was assistant coach last year and have been head coach since Christmas,” new head coach Kevin Walton said. “It’s been going really well. Guys are working hard in the weight room and we’re doing 7 on 7 all through June. Their attitudes are great.”

The foundation has been laid thanks to former head coach Scott Duley, who stepped aside to see his former offensive coordinator take over the program.

The new head coach is ready to hit the ground running with a talented senior class back including running back Chase Hall and tight end Cody Taylor, both of which will help lead the way for a passionate football team.

“We have a lot of heart,” Walton said. “The kids work hard. They do what you ask of them. I think we’re trying to focus on playing physical and playing four quarters and our kids have really bought into that.”

In just their second year of organized football, the Urchins made it into the playoffs in 2013 and in the process won the school’s first ever postseason contest.

Last year though, East Union missed out on the fun and this season their aim is to make it back.

“That’s our goal,” Coach Walton said. “We want to try and be in the playoffs year in and year out. Hopefully after that we can make it to the north half and just continue to get to the next round. That’s something we haven’t accomplished here and we want to try and be that year in and year out team in the playoffs.”

The epic Urchins will start the 2015 campaign at home versus Falkner before visiting Hamilton the following week.
