HSFT Stop #56: Grenada
Team is one of the main messages that have been spread throughout the offseason for Grenada. The Chargers finished last season with a 7-4 record and lost in the 6A playoffs by a touchdown. Now they are under new leadership, with this being Head Coach Brooks Oakley’s 1st season with Grenada.
“They’ve had real success here the last couple of years,” Oakley said. “Just trying to carry these seniors were sophomores, and sometimes, when you fight that, they weren’t a huge part of that team and that success, so making them understand that, hey, you can’t just show up and win a state championship; there’s work that’s put into that. There was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears put into that.”
Grenada is looking to replicate something like their 2024 season where they won 14 games straight and captured a state championship by a large margin.
“The expectation is I want to win another ring,” offensive lineman Kham Washington said. “I played in one when I was 15, my sophomore year, and just trying to get another one and at least leave with two in four years. I think that would be pretty good. Playing a new role as an offensive lineman and trying to get the younger guys’ expectations up and give the season high hopes. I try to put them into some adverse situations and see how they are going to handle it because we know at some point in time this season, we are going to see some adversity and teach some leadership skills through that.”
The Chargers know it won’t be easy to breeze through the season being in a highly competitive 6A division, but they have been instilling competition with both sides of the ball being pushed by the standard of just getting it done.
“Iron sharpens iron, we just trying to get each other better every day and just go out there and win,” Corday Singleton, cornerback, said.
“Just trying to get each other better, communication, and just everybody to the ball and just being a good defense,” linebacker Austin Moore said.
“It’s kind of been hot outside, but we don’t let that stop us,” senior running back Malik Taylor said. “We just got to keep grinding so we can be prepared for the season.”
Grenada will have a bye their first week but will open the season September 4, against Ripley on the road.
