MHP’s 1034 Project: Supporting troopers’ mental health

MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) – Work-life balance is important in any job, including law enforcement. But often, officers struggle with leaving the job at work. That can put a strain on family life and relationships.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol has been implementing the 1034 Project. The initiative is designed to give state troopers the tools to deal with the emotional toll that comes with their work.

It also provides resources for troopers’ families, so they can better understand what their family member is going through and help them better cope when they’re off the road.

“Let’s face it. Law enforcement officers can see things in one day that the normal citizen may never see in their lifetime, and we have to do a better job, again, with normalizing those types of conditions and situations where we can go out and do our jobs,” said Major Johnny Poulos, Director of 1034 Project.

Poulos said the Highway Patrol is continuing to step up its recruitment and retention efforts.
