18 injured in school bus crash in Lowndes County

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Eighteen people were injured in an afternoon crash involving a Lowndes County School Bus ..
The two- vehicle crash happened around 3:15 PM Tuesday in the Northbound lane of Highway 45 between the Sqwincher plant and the old Lowndes County School District Offices near the Artesia Road intersection.
At the time there were 22 children on the bus.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, a 2025 Honda driven by Michael Kunkle of Columbus was traveling east on Artesia Road when it collided with a Lowndes County School bus traveling north on Highway 45.
Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins tells WCBI the bus ran off the road, and rolled.
Some of the children were reportedly ejected from the bus.
Sixteen students sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe.
One student was airlifted from the scene to Birmingham. Two others were intially taken to Baptist Golden Triangle, but later flown to Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson.
Both drivers were taken to Baptist Golden Triangle.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and the accident reconstruction team has already been on-site.
