18-wheeler loaded with bricks turns over in Columbus
Drivers take an alternate route as overturned semi-truck interrupts traffic.
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Columbus street is blocked off after a semi-truck carrying 40,000 pounds of brick turns over.
Columbus Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Marco Rodriguez said the single vehicle accident happened around 12 noon and crews worked until evening to get the truck turned upright.
They had to unload the brick to upright the truck.
Officials said the driver was traveling Southbound on Railroad Street back to Georgia when the 18-wheeler overturned.
“He moved over a little too much to the right, there was another car coming northbound trying to make room. He lost control once the tires went into the ditch. The whole load shifted and pulled him into the ditch,” said Rodriguez.
He had just left the Columbus brickyard.
The truck driver crawled through the broken windshield opening to escape.
The truck and trailer were damaged. Officials said there were no signs of leaking fuel from the truck.
Railroad street was blocked off from 12th Ave North to 14th Avenue North.
The driver was evaluated by Baptists paramedics, and no injuries were reported.
