The League of Women Voters of the Golden Triangle Area
The group is committed to educating and informing voters across the Golden Triangle Area to improve civic engagement.
GOLDEN TRIANGLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Civic participation is one of the most important things a citizen can do.
But to participate, a person needs to be educated.
That’s where the League of Women Voters of the Golden Triangle Area comes in.
Their mission is to assist and educate the public in civic engagement.
To inform people of where and how to vote.
And what candidates believe in.
Callie Poole with the League of Women Voters of the Golden Triangle described how her organization assisted voters in Clay and Oktibbeha counties during the primaries.
“We went and had a table and helped people figure out what ward they’re in,” Poole said. “Because some people may not know exactly which of the council members will be on their ballot, or where to vote. Especially because in Columbus and Starkville, the district lines have changed recently. And then, before the primary election, we were also registering voters so that they could vote in the general elections. You have to be registered 30 days in advance before the election. So we’re just trying to make voting easier for people.”
Mississippi and Alabama have some of the most restrictive voting laws in the US.
