Lieutenant Governor looking ahead to Legislative Session

Hosemann focused more on the work of the Legislature, less on his political career

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) –

The 2027 Legislative Session may be a few months away, but Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann is already making plans, and some of those have to do with unfinished business from this year’s session.

The Lieutenant Governor says education is always a priority, and he would still like to see a cellphone ban in Mississippi’s classrooms. He added that since the new funding formula for education was devised, the Legislature has reached full funding twice, and he would like to see that continue.

Hosemann believes the issue of prescription drug costs still needs to be addressed, and that the Legislature needs to explore ways to make housing more affordable.

Overall, he says the state is in a good position. As for his own position in the government, for right now, he’s good with that too.

“In fact, everything we used to be 50th in in Mississippi, we’re not 50th any more. This state’s in the best financial shape it’s ever been. We paid off $1.2 billion of the state’s debt. Maybe Washington ought to take some examples from Mississippi. And we have got lower taxes, better education, people coming here with huge investments all over. Mississippi’s in the best shape it’s ever been in.”

When asked whether he planned to run for Governor in 2027, Hosemann said, “I’m running for Lieutenant Governor right now. We’ve got so much going on in this session, there’s time to be making that decision. I really enjoy working for people. I’m honored. I never thought I’d be here. I’m honored that people would hire me to do this job, you know, so I think I’ve got a few years left, we’ll see.”

Hosemann is in his second term as Lieutenant Governor.
