State Treasurer trying to give money back to Mississippians

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi’s Treasurer is trying to put more money in the wallets of Mississippians and help them save money too.

David McRae was in Columbus today as part of his statewide tour letting state residents know about some of the programs the treasury offers.

The state’s unclaimed property program has returned more than 200 million dollars to Mississippians from forgotten accounts to unclaimed life insurance policies.

McRae says every one of those payouts puts more money into local economies.

He was also touting the state’s college savings programs MPACT and MACS and their benefits for parents and students.

“These are both our college savings programs. Both of them are great for saving money, so that when a child is ready to go to college, with the MPACT plan, we can lock in your college tuition, whatever it costs today, and with our MACS plan, you can put as little as $25 into it, and you can start savig for college today. So that a child doesn’t graduate with debt.”

The Treaurer’s Office will be hosting an unclaimed property event in Lowndes County inthe coming weeks. For information on that or the college savings programs you can go to treasury.ms.gov
