NORTH MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) – With age, sometimes comes changes that families may not expect or be prepared for.
Monday, September 21, is World Alzheimer’s Day.
Alzheimer’s Association said the international holiday is a global effort to raise awareness and challenge the stigma around Alzheimer’s and other dementia.
AA statistics show that nearly 63,000 adults over 65 have Alzheimer’s in Mississippi.
And one caregiving agency in the Magnolia state says they working to lighten the load that families carry by offering their in-home service.
Right At Home serves North Mississippi, the Delta and Jackson Metro Area with non-medical in-home care.
RAH leaders said one of the first signs of Alzheimer’s is a lack of awareness.
They also offered advice for families with loved ones who are battling the disease.
“The main thing I can think of is… being at home because familiarity is key to cognitive ability because you’re just used to being at home and is a familiar environment. Another (tip) I would say getting is with a physician or someone in the holistic medicine world and looking at things like diet, exercise, supplements, minerals, vitamins, things that you can take in because I think that we are a product of our environment,” said Will Bradham, owner of Right at Home North Mississippi and the Jackson Metro Area.
Right at Home has offices in Starkville and Oxford in North Mississippi.
