Lowndes County is one of several extending its burn ban.
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-
Lowndes County is one of several extending its burn ban.
The county issued the extension late last week. The Board of Supervisors ratified it at its meeting this morning.
While most of the county saw at least a little bit of rain over the weekend (11/6 -11/8) , it was not enough to significantly lower the fire danger in the area.
Some commercial controlled burning is still going on, but all private burning is on hold until the 26th or conditions improve.
“It is a very dangerous condition out there now, with it being so dry, even though we did have some rain. That helps obviously it helps, but it’s very dangerous conditions when it comes to all the dry grass, and everything that’s there. A small spark could really get out of hand quickly. This time of year you see the winds pick up, that sort of thing. So, we think for public safety concerns, that it’s good to have a burn ban in place.”
The burn ban in Winston County has been extended until December 7th. Both counties will reassess the situation if the area gets enough rain.
