Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Scott Colom make their case to voters
TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – It was September of last year when Scott Colom announced his campaign for U.S. Senate, and he says the momentum is strong.
‘It is going great, the people of Mississippi did it. I did over sixty town halls, our junior senator hasn’t done one, she refuses to debate and discuss situations that matter, I am running on higher wages, lower costs, save our healthcare , save our hospitals, the war on Iran has been bad for consumers, we have to have someone who is going to fight for issues that matter,” Colom said.
Colom is the district attorney for the 16th Circuit. Senator Hyde Smith was appointed in 2018 to serve in Senator Thad Cochran’s seat, until a special election was held. She defeated Mike Espy, and was elected to a full term in 2020.
Hyde Smith says it is vital for Republicans to keep control of congress.
“The minute we lose control, if that were to happen, they would start impeachment proceedings, they would start investigations, they would pack the Supreme Court, make DC a statehood, all those things they are planning to do, we can’t let that happen, but that is the seriousness of this particular midterm,” Sen. Hyde-Smith said.
In the final days of the campaign, both candidates have had high profile rallies, featuring political powerhouses. Former President Bill Clinton threw his support behind Scott Colom during a rally Friday at the Link Centre in Tupelo. And last Monday, President Donald Trump headlined a rally for Senator Cindy Hyde Smith at The Crossroads Arena in Corinth.
Both candidates say voters have a clear choice.
‘My opponent has supported transgender surgeries in minors, signed onto a letter stating that, that should concern everybody. I am chairman of the pro life caucus, Mississippians are very pro life and I am honored to be that chairman, I have great committee assignments on appropriation and on defense,” Colom said.
“I am a common sense person raised on Mississippi values, and issues, I believe in a secure border, Second Amendment rights, a lot of things in her commercials about me are lies, and it is because she doesn’t want to focus on issues that matter, she has betrayed us when it comes to the war in Iran, she has betrayed us when it comes to tariffs, I try will to actually make the people of Mississippi’s life better, that is what I am running on,” said Sen. Hyde-Smith.
Colom has a message for President Donald Trump and Republican voters.
“Listen, you voted for America first but you are getting Mississippi last, I will make him keep promises he made, he promised lower grocery prices on day one, that didn’t happen, I will fight for that, he promised no more endless wars, we are in a war with Iran with no end in sight, I will fight for that, he promised to release the Epstein files, I will fight for that , so you want someone that is going to hold President Trump to commitments he made, vote for Scott Colom,” Colom said.
Senator Hyde Smith says she will continue to help advance the President’s agenda and policies.
“We got the farm bill out of committee, we call it farm bill 2 point 0, has some great things in there, we haven’t gotten it across the finish line yet. The Great bill, largest tax cut in American history, we are realizing benefits of that, no tax on overtime, that is a huge thing , it is a big deal, when you had linemen doing their work , and no tax on that, we accomplished some good things,” Sen. Hyde-Smith said.
The polls can predict, the ads try and persuade, but Voters in Mississippi have the final say in the Senate election, when they step inside the voting booth and cast their ballots.
Senator Cindy Hyde- Smith was the first woman elected to serve Mississippi in Congress. If elected, Scott Colom will be the first Democrat elected to the senate in Mississippi since 1982.
