VARDAMAN, Miss. (WCBI) – The annual festival dedicated to sweet potatoes wraps up with a cooking contest.

It is part of the fiftieth annual Vardaman Sweet Potato Festival. Entries included sweet potato soup, pies, cakes, dip, cookies and many other goodies.

All recipes had to have at least one-half cup of sweet potatoes, and it had to also taste like sweet potatoes.

Organizers say it is a fun way to close out a week-long festival focusing on the crop that Vardaman is known for.

“This is what our community relies on, this brings the industry together, we celebrate our farmers because if it wasn’t for our farmers we wouldn’t have any of this, ” said Amber Dauzat.

Winners were announced during the “Harvest Banquet” which closed out the Sweet Potato Festival. WCBI’s Allie Martin and his wife Robin, were judges in the recipe cooking contest.
